In each case artists have shot to popularity, because their songs were used by millions of TikTok users in their videos. Old Town Road has become the origin story for a remarkable series of viral musical successes on TikTok. Much of this success can be credited to the song becoming an early TikTok “meme”, picked up by millions of users. The artist’s name was Lil Nas X and the song Old Town Road, which has since become the most successful song of all time, the first ever song to reach 15 times platinum. The artist made news because Billboard magazine had removed the song from its country charts, after it took off in popularity, entering both the country and general Hot 100 charts. Living at his sister’s house and feeling bit lonely, in December 2018 he had bought a simple beat for US $30, recorded a song, half country and half rap, and posted it on Soundcloud and social media. In early 2019, an unknown 19-year-old college drop-out from Atlanta, Georgia, made headlines around the world. That’s because creator culture on TikTok is changing the way hits are made, how music is promoted, and how the world discovers music, even for those artists who choose not to engage with it. “If everyone’s making music for the TikTok, who’s making music for my generation?”, she asked.Īdele might resist, but the platform has nonetheless been popularising and promoting her song Easy on me, with creators using it in almost one million videos in the first month after its release, making it viral on the app alone. “Tik-a-Tok-a-Who?”, was Adele’s response to her management’s suggestion to promote her music to younger audiences on Tiktok, the video-sharing platform owned by Chinese company ByteDance. Reading aloud to children helps them build critical literacy skills. With these tools, Cone says, students don’t need a home internet connection to access high-quality educational materials, which helps level the playing field. “We develop products that are accessible for everyone,” says Torin Cone, head of sales and marketing. Playaway gives schools and libraries the tools to promote literacy and bridge the digital divide. To overcome this challenge, Ohio-based Playaway Products offers a wide range of take-home electronic devices that come pre-loaded with content for learners of all ages-including audiobooks, read-alongs, and tablets. The shift to remote learning during the pandemic underscored the fact that many students lack home broadband access, hindering their ability to engage in extended learning opportunities that can help close achievement gaps. Here are some promising resources for supporting reading recovery and accelerating students’ reading skills. The good news is K–12 districts still have millions of dollars in unspent pandemic relief aid that school libraries can use to purchase literacy materials. Reading high-interest, low-level books and large-print materials listening to audiobooks and immersing themselves in combined print-and-multimedia experiences both during and outside of class can help students of all ages make up significant ground in reading. The data show that schools still have a lot of work to do to make up for lost instructional time-and students need as many opportunities as they can get to learn key literacy skills. The results from the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), commonly referred to as the Nation’s Report Card, indicate that a third of students in grades four and eight can’t read at even a “basic” level. Not surprisingly, this has led to sharp declines in student proficiency. Nearly three years after COVID-19 shut down schools from coast to coast, parents and educators are still trying to help kids make up for interrupted learning resulting from the pandemic-and libraries play a pivotal role in their success.Ī study by global consulting firm McKinsey & Company analyzed assessment data from a popular digital learning platform for students in kindergarten through eighth grade and found that students learned only 67 percent of the math and 87 percent of the reading their grade-level peers typically would have learned by fall 2021. They talked about attending trainings to learn “shiny buzzwords” but seeing little difference in the way work was done facing “ambiguity and lack of clarity around progression, compensation, and responsibilities” getting “no definitive answers” to what they felt were basic organizational questions and concluding that holacracy was a “half-baked” idea. In exit interviews and surveys, the 6% shared their concerns. Although most decided to stay, 18% took the package, with 6% citing holacracy. On this particular day, in May 2015, the circle charged with overseeing holacracy’s adoption was questioning the method’s effectiveness.Ī couple of months earlier, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh had offered severance packages to all employees for whom self-management was not a good fit-or who wished to leave for any other reason. Five employees were camped out in a team room at Zappos, the largest company so far to implement holacracy-a form of self-management that confers decision power on fluid teams, or “circles,” and roles rather than individuals. It was a Thursday afternoon in Las Vegas. But their research and experience also suggest that elements of self-organization can be valuable tools for companies of all kinds, and they look at circumstances where it makes more sense to blend the new approaches with traditional models. It’s distributed among roles, not individuals, and responsibilities shift according to fit and as the work changes.Īdopting self-management wholesale-using it to determine what should be done, who should do it, and how people will be rewarded across an entire enterprise-is hard, uncertain work, and the authors argue that in many environments it won’t pay off.

You may feel bored around day 10 or 15, but keep going, because your best sentence may come at day 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, or 30. That’s when you hold on and discover how your mind actually works. That’s when your creativity really kicks in. By day 5, you’ll run out of surface-level stuff to write about. What makes this a challenge is that you need to overcome your own perceived limitations. No need to wait for inspiration, it’s there. This challenge simplifies the process: 1 sentence. For many people, writing every day can be a challenge, especially if they have a lofty goal, like 2 pages a day or a 1,000 words. The goal of this exercise is to practice observing deeper, seeing details that aren’t immediately visible. Some days I write something really good, other days, I just try to get a sentence down. And each day, I see something a little different in it. Each day, write one new sentence, as long or as short as you want.įor me, I chose to write about the intersection in front of my apartment. It can be your chair, your room, your dog, your family, your cup of coffee, anything, but whatever you pick, stick with it for 30 days. For the next 30 days, I want to challenge you to write about the same thing every day. We can apply this creative technique to writing as well. They challenge themselves to be more refined or more creative, bringing something new to the original idea. They see angles, colors, textures in a different way. Each time they draw, they dig a bit deeper. Each time they draw something, they see something different. In order for artists to improve, they need to draw the same thing over and over again. On their seaward-facing slopes, hidden in the short grass and soft volcanic soil, are some 100,000 puffin burrows, a fraction of the 1.1 million burrows found in more than 20 colonies scattered across the Westmans’ 18 islands. The crater valley is on the outskirts of the Westmans’ only town-itself called Vestmannaeyjar, population 4,400ish-and is surrounded by steep, green cliffs. The venue that sells this ostensible delicacy is a center-pole big top tent erected in a long-extinct volcanic crater on Heimaey, the largest island in an archipelago called Vestmannaeyjar, or the Westman Islands, seven miles off Iceland’s southern coast. The breast meat is a deep mahogany and pulls apart fibrous-but-tender, like the flesh of a medium-ripe peach. It looks vaguely insectoid, its wings all but meatless, thin bones curving out like antennae. In life, an Atlantic Puffin stands just 10 inches tall, its wings stubby and narrow when its tiny torso is served in a paper tray, it’s difficult even to recognize as having belonged to a bird. Puffins are also used in traditional Icelandic dishes such as skyr (a type of yogurt) and hákarl (fermented shark).Let’s just get this out of the way: No, it does not taste like chicken. Soaked in salt water, smoked with wood chips and dried sheep dung, then boiled for two hours in a sweet malt beverage before being refrigerated and finally served, bone-in and cold, alongside a packet of butter, smoked puffin tastes briny and a bit fishy and musky-sweet in the manner of mesquite barbecue. The taste has been described as being similar to a cross between chicken and fish, with a slightly gamey flavor. Puffin meat is a delicacy in Iceland and is often compared to chicken. These rafts can sometimes contain thousands of individual puffins! Conclusion Puffins are very social birds, and can often be seen gathered together in large groups called “rafts”. They store the fish in a pouch located under their beak, which they then bring back to feed their chicks. Puffins have specialised beaks that allow them to catch multiple fish at once. After breeding season is over, puffins head back out to sea where they spend the majority of their time feeding on small fish. Puffins typically lay two eggs per clutch, and both parents help to raise the young chicks. Their breeding grounds are usually on rocky islands or cliffs, where they can build their nests in burrows or crevices. Puffins spend most of their time at sea, only coming ashore to breed. Puffins are found in the North Atlantic Ocean and breed on rocky islands off the coast of Maine, Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland. What Does Puffin Bird Taste Like?Ī puffin bird is a small, stocky seabird with a large beak. If you are interested in trying puffin meat, you can purchase it online from specialty food retailers. They are hunted for their meat, which is considered to be a delicacy in some parts of the world. Puffins are a type of seabird that is found in the North Atlantic Ocean. So, are puffins tasty? Unfortunately, we can’t really say, as there are no records of anyone ever eating one! However, given that they eat mostly small fish, it’s likely that they would taste somewhat similar to other seafood such as cod or haddock. Puffins use their beaks to scoop up fish from the water and then swallow them whole. Their diet consists mainly of small fish, which they catch by swimming underwater using their wings for propulsion. Puffins breed in colonies on rocky coasts and islands and spend most of their time at sea, only coming ashore to nest.
